A Typical Big Ten Slugfest as Spartans Top Golden Gophers 61-50

Rundown:  The 12th ranked Michigan State Spartans improved to 19-4 overall and move into a second place tie in the Big Ten with an 8-2 record, by defeating the slumping Minnesota Golden Gophers (17-6, 5-5 Big Ten), 61-50.  It was a sluggish start in the first half by both teams, failing to get any sort of offense going, as Minnesota took a 20-18 lead.  It was a whole different game in the second half which saw the Spartans storm to a 43-point half, outscoring the Gophers by 13 by playing solid defense and most importantly only committing 3 turnovers.

The short-handed Spartans were once again banged up all over the place.  Travis Trice was already out with a head injury, Gary Harris wasn’t himself due to back spasms, but finished the game with 15 points, including four three-pointer’s.  Both Branden Dawson (sprained ankle) and Adreian Payne (nose) joined the club of injured Spartans, but luckily both returned to have nice games.  However with 1:17 remaining in the game, the Spartans received a real scare when Keith Appling went down with a dislocated right shoulder, but thankfully rejoined the bench in the waning seconds of the game.  Hopefully none of these injuries are too serious and they’ll all be able to practice for Saturday’s trap game against Purdue and next week’s pivotal showdown versus in-state rival Michigan.

Player of the Game:  Once again the award goes to junior guard, Keith Appling who stuffed the stat sheet for the second straight game.  Appling finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Next Up:  On Saturday evening, the Spartans travel to West Lafayette to face the Purdue Boilermakers who are having a bit of a down year at 12-11 overall, but 5-5 in the Big Ten.  Hopefully Michigan State will not be looking ahead to the game Tuesday against Michigan, because if they do, this might spell trouble.

After a Slow Start, Spartans Turn it on in 2nd Half to Survive Scare From Illini

Rundown: On Thursday evening, the 13th ranked Michigan State Spartans rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini 80-75, in East Lansing.  The Breslin Center was rocking as the Spartans opened the second half on a 14-0 run to put them ahead for the remainder of the game.  Keith Appling had a truly inspiring performance Thursday, after having arguably his worst of the season at Indiana.  The junior point guard finished with 24 points and a huge, off-balance, scooping layup to stretch the Spartans lead to six points.  Despite playing the whole second half, Appling never seemed to show signs of fatigue as he willed the now 18-4, (7-2 Big Ten) Spartans to victory.  The end result was good, but the Spartans lost two key players due to injuries in this one.  Starting shooting guard Gary Harris (back spasms), and backup point guard Travis Trice (concussion), were injured early in the second half, forcing the starters to play the majority of it.  Both are in question for Wednesday night’s contest at home against Minnesota (17-5, 5-4), whom the Spartans lost to on the road earlier this season.  These can be two very costly injuries, if out for a long period of time.  We will see later in the week how they each progress.

Player of the Game:  Keith Appling, who was all over the place, nearly achieving a triple-double.  He finished the game with; 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.  This could point to better things to come from him, as many of his games of late have been disappointing.

Next Up:  Michigan State plays at home on Wednesday (2/6) against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  A few weeks ago, the Spartans fell to the then no. 9 ranked Gophers in a lop-sided 76-63 affair.

Spartans Lose Tight One in Bloomington

Yogi Ferrell (11) of Indiana goes up for a layup, contested by Michigan State guard, Travis Trice (20).

Rundown:  The 13th ranked Michigan State Spartans fell to the 7th ranked Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday afternoon by a score of 75-70.  Victor Oladipo led the way with 21 points for the Hoosiers, who jumped out to an early 6-point halftime lead.  The Spartans fought back to eventually take the lead late in the second half, but just couldn’t pull away, leaving the door open for the Hoosiers, who held the Spartans scoreless for the final 3:30 of the game.  The former Indiana high school standout, Gary Harris, poured in five threes for the Spartans and finished the game with a team high 21 points.  Michigan State now drops to 17-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten, while Indiana improves to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten play.

Player of the Game: Victor Oladipo.  He was an absolute terror on both ends of the court, finishing with; 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 3 blocks.

Next Up:  Michigan State plays at home on Thursday (1/31) vs. Illinois (15-6, 2-5), who lost to Michigan at home on Sunday evening.
